Executive General Manager of Commercial Operations and self-confessed sports fanatic Nick Addison, shares with us his love of all things sport and the challenges he has faced recently as the pandemic takes its toll on the corporate market.

My role at the VRC is … Executive General Manager Commercial Operations.

I am responsible for… overseeing the commercial side of our business which includes Commercial Media Partnerships, Sponsorship, Corporate Sales including race day and non race day business, hospitality, in-house design and Headquarters Tavern our on-site gaming facility.

The most rewarding part of my job is ... having the opportunity to work on one of the best major sports and entertainment events in Australia and the world.

A challenging part of my job is ... the current COVID-19 landscape represents a challenge unlike any other we have faced before. We all look forward to the day where we can resume normal life both on a personal and professional level.

A proud moment in my career thus far ... being part of a fantastic VRC team that has contributed to the continued development and enhancement of the VRC’s commercial program.

I love the sport of racing because ... I am a sports junkie and consider the Melbourne Cup Carnival to be one of the highlights on the Australian sports calendar.

My favourite racing moment to date ... Michelle Payne winning the Lexus Melbourne Cup – it re-wrote the history books, which is difficult to do for a race that is almost 160 years old.

Someone who I admire (in racing or just generally) is  ...  Former VRC Chief Executive Dale Monteith – he gave me my first opportunity at Executive level at the VRC and supported me strongly. I have always been grateful for that.

A horse I have loved or admired is ... Amalfi, winner of the 2001 AAMI Victoria Derby, ridden by Damien Oliver. I backed Amalfi that day and remember it well as it was prior to me working at the VRC and I enjoyed Derby Day with friends in the Nursery Car Park!

My job was affected by the covid-19 pandemic because ... COVID-19 has had a devastating impact on all sections of the community, but particularly the corporate market as confidence has dropped significantly.

We overcame the challenges of the pandemic by ... we have developed a clear plan to navigate the challenges posed by COVID-19. We have a long way to go as a country, but I can see a pathway through and it will be important that the VRC and its members, customers and stakeholders at all levels stick together to ride out the storm.

In my spare time I like to ... spend time with my family, running and supporting Hawthorn in the AFL!!
