This year due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal is taking place digitally. The Salvation Army work tirelessly to help the most vulnerable in our community and have been on the frontline during this crisis. Behind the gates of Flemington Racecourse is a myriad of people working in different roles to keep the world-famous track going like clockwork. One important role is that of the Watchmen, the security personnel who keep Flemington safe, night and day.
For almost 40 years, Dan Blackmore has worked behind the starting gates at all Victorian metro racecourses as well as at Warrnambool. He has helped load thousands of racehorses into the barriers, including champions and legends of the sport. The job is not always an easy one, but for a passionate horse lover like Dan, it is one full of rewards. In the COVID-19 pandemic era, he is even more grateful to do a job he loves every day. We catch up with him and find out how COVID-19 has affected the way he and his colleagues are working.
