Prince of Penzance

HEROIC FEATS

Bred in New Zealand and trained in Ballarat, Prince Of Penzance went into the 2015 Melbourne Cup as a 100-1 chance. Making a late move down the home straight, Michelle Payne and Prince Of Penzance loomed up at the 300-metre mark to then storm home to win ahead of two-time Melbourne Cup place-getter, Max Dynamite (FR), and international star, Criterion (NZ). The victory was even sweeter, with the stayer overcoming potential career-ending injury twice and a serious illness to be first past the post that day.

The win will remain as one of the greatest wins in Melbourne Cup history not only for the gelding’s heroic effort, but because it also marked the first time a female jockey won the coveted race.

LEGENDARY STATUS

Prince Of Penzance started his career by breaking his maiden in his first start at Stawell in 2013, but he took his time to progress through the grades and had his first taste of the Melbourne Cup Carnival in 2014. He ran second in the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes on Stakes Day two weeks after winning the Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup, and finished his spring by running third in the Group 2 Sandown Classic..

In 2015, Prince Of Penzance had a quiet autumn in preparation for tackling the busy spring racing season. He did not place in his first four starts that spring, then finished an impressive second place in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup over 2500m.

Prince of Penzance retired in 2017 and enjoys his time as one of the stars at Living Legends
