Living Legend - Efficient

In 2007 this New Zealand-bred gelding became the first grey to win the Group 1 Melbourne Cup since Subzero in 1992, and the first horse since Phar Lap to win the Cup the year after winning the Group 1 Victoria Derby.

Efficient showed plenty of promise from the beginning of his career, winning five consecutive races in his first spring campaign in 2006, including the AAMI Victoria Derby for owner Lloyd Williams. This was a dominant win, as he defeated his rivals by 2.3 lengths.

Despite being unplaced the whole of the 2007 season leading into the Melbourne Cup, Efficient won the great race, providing the highest win dividend for a Melbourne Cup winner in over 10 years, at $22.70.

He missed both the 2008 and 2009 Melbourne Cups due to injury; however, he did add another Group 1 win to his record, taking out the 2009 Turnbull Stakes. He retired in 2012 with seven wins from 29 starts, a strike rate of 24%.

He now resides happily at Living Legends.
