The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) is gearing up to host 5,000 patrons for each day of a spectacular summer of twilight racing with the Flemington Presents: Summer Racing Twilight Series.
Following the popular debut of the twilight timeslot at headquarters in 2020, this year all four January race days will be held as twilight meetings, culminating in the Rapid Racing Race Day on 29 January 2021.
Racegoers can enjoy all the food, entertainment and racing action throughout afternoons and into the evening including dinner service for the Flemington Presents: Summer Twilight Series, with a range of venues across the course offering something for everyone.
Members and racing fans can relax in the Front Lawn Beer Garden, enjoying street eats from some of Melbourne’s hottest food trucks as well as live entertainment, lawn games and an outdoor cinema for all ages, subject to Government COVID-safe approval.
The Picnic Lawn is the perfect spot for families to relax and enjoy the best of summer racing, and includes access to the striking Birdcage Bar, with its golden wings soaring above the famous Flemington lawns, while the Kids Corner will keep the youngest racing fans entertained with free activities for children including lawn games, face painting, hobby horse races and more.
The Club Stand’s spectacular Roof Garden will host Summer Twilight Rooftop Sessions, with VRC members able to soak up the summer sunshine and take in all the action from one of Melbourne’s most impressive rooftop venues with stunning views of our city. The Roof Garden and G.H. Mumm Champagne Bar will be open until 9pm, for all members to enjoy the famous Flemington hospitality.
The gates to Australia's premier racing destination will open on the first day of 2021 for the popular New Year’s Race Day on Friday 1 January with an eight-race card highlighted by the Group 3 Standish Handicap (1800m) and the Listed Bagot Handicap (2800m). Patrons can enjoy a casual picnic on the Front Lawn or continue the new year celebrations at a number of venues across the course.
Black-type summer racing will continue with Chester Manifold Stakes Day on Saturday 9 January, where a quality line up of gallopers will compete in the Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m).
The Summer Racing Twilight Series continues on Saturday 16 January with Summer Race Day, where everyone can again take in all the racing action into the evening.
The season comes to a thrilling conclusion on Friday 29 January with the Rapid Racing Race Day. The innovative Rapid Racing meeting will maintain a condensed program of seven races and 30 minute gaps, kicking off at 4:30pm.
VRC CEO Steve Rosich said the twilight racing calendar at Flemington had something for racegoers of all ages and interests.
“With confirmation that we can welcome at least 5,000 patrons on course throughout January and an exciting line up of quality racing, food and entertainment, we can’t wait to welcome crowds for the Flemington Presents: Summer Racing Twilight Series,” said Mr Rosich.
“Racing fans embraced the twilight racing timeslot last year and we’re delighted to bring it back, complemented by an outstanding food and entertainment offering with something for the whole family.
“The later start allows everyone to cap off brilliant summer days with an afternoon of fun and entertainment in the sunshine at Flemington while enjoying the skill of our marvellous human and equine athletes on the track.”

New Year’s Day Race Day
Enjoy the first day of the new year with New Year’s Race Day at Flemington on Friday 1 January. The day will provide the perfect opportunity to continue new year festivities, with a eight-race card highlighted by Group 3 Standish Handicap (1800m) and the Listed Bagot Handicap (2800m).
Flemington’s Front Lawn will be transformed into the Front Lawn Beer Garden, the perfect setting to relax and recover with friends post New Years’ festivities.
The Beer Garden will feature delicious street eats from some of Melbourne’s hottest food trucks as well as live entertainment, lawn games and an outdoor cinema for all ages, subject to Government COVID-safe approval.
Those looking for something a little more relaxed will enjoy The Picnic Lawn. Bring along a rug and a tasty picnic spread, or purchase from our retail food outlets and bars close by. Racegoers will enjoy the races in the picturesque chic garden setting whilst enjoying live entertainment, family-friendly activities and perhaps a cocktail or two from the speciality bar.
Members can keep their new year celebrations going with The Trackside Bar in The Atrium and The Rooftop Bar serving refreshing summer cocktails to complement the on course entertainment.
Gates open at 1:25pm with Race 1 commencing at 2:25pm and the last at 6:55pm.
Chester Manifold Stakes Day
The summer fun continues as Black-type summer racing takes the field at Headquarters on Chester Manifold Stakes Day, as a quality line up of off-season gallopers will compete in the Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m).
Racegoers can set up a picnic as Flemington’s famous Front Lawn is transformed into The Picnic Lawn, chilling out to live music and enjoying tasty noshes from Melbourne’s most popular food trucks.
Parents and children will be entertained by free children’s activities at the east end of the Front Lawn, including lawn games.
Gates open at 1:05pm with Race 1 commencing at 2:05pm and the last at 7:05pm.
Summer Race Day
Summer Race Day on Saturday 18 January will feature a nine-race card including the running of the Listed Kensington Stakes (1000m).
A chic picnic amongst our famous rose gardens is the perfect way to spend a summer raceday on The Picnic Lawn. Children can enjoy the free activities on the east end of the Front Lawn while acoustic tunes and family-friendly lawn games will keep the whole family entertained.
Racing fans can reserve a seat above the famous Flemington Front Lawn and take in spectacular views of the racecourse and Melbourne’s city skyline from The Hill Stand, located directly opposite the Winning Post.
Gates open at 1:18pm with Race 1 commencing at 2:18pm and the last at 7:10pm.
Rapid Racing Race Day
The Flemington Presents: Summer Twilight Series will conclude in stunning fashion on 29 January with the Rapid Racing Race Day, with the seven-race card kicking off at 4:30pm.
The Rapid Racing concept was launched last year and saw Victoria’s top metropolitan and country riders face off in a team competition in races held over the famous Flemington straight course. Last year saw the Metropolitan team coached by Denis Pagan triumph over Liam Pickering’s Country team, will the AAMI Victoria Derby-winning trainer return in 2021 to add another trophy to his growing collection?
The Front Lawn Beer Garden will be the hottest spot to catch all the Rapid Racing action, with Melbourne’s favourite food trucks and live entertainment adding to the atmosphere of the exciting racing format. Kids activities will again be on offer at the east end of the Front Lawn, while The Picnic Lawn offers a more relaxed family-friendly vibe.
Members can cheer on their Rapid Racing team while sipping a Strawberry Gin Fizz at the Trackside Bar in The Atrium or enjoy a glass of Mumm amongst our famous rose gardens from the picnic tables on the Members Lawn.
