Jye McNeil after his Melbourne Cup win (Image: Racing Photos)
The Lexus Melbourne Cup may have been in Jye McNeil's hands standing in Fitzroy Gardens on Wednesday, but it still had not sunk in that he had won the race.
McNeil etched his name into history with his bold front-running ride on Twilight Payment, and while he celebrated with family and connections on Tuesday night, the modest hoop admits it all still feels surreal.
"It still probably hasn't 100 per cent sunk in yet, but I'm enjoying the moment," McNeil said.
"Last night we got back to the apartment and had a few drinks to celebrate with (my partner) Jess (Payne), a few close friends and my manager. We had some Flower Drum last night and then I caught up with the owners (Nick and Lloyd Williams) a little bit later on, so it was a fantastic way to do it.
"I'm very privileged to be in a position where I was trusted with the ride and a massive congratulations to them (for winning a seventh Lexus Melbourne Cup)."
McNeil said it was special to celebrate the win with Jess and his newborn son Oakley.
"Jess was able to sit her phone up and get some footage of her cheering me home. She had hold of Oak and he was getting knocked around a little bit as she got a bit excited," McNeil said.
"It was great to see them cheering me home."
As for how he and Jess plan to spend the prizemoney for winning the $8 million race?
"We haven't got that far yet,” he said with a chuckle.
"We are just going to celebrate and enjoy the moment. I'm sure we've got plenty of time to reflect on that."
