Irish Derby winner Santiago is out of the Lexus Melbourne Cup.
Racing Victoria stewards announced on Saturday morning that the Aidan O’Brien-trained Northern Hemisphere three-year-old was having a short break and would not contest the $8m G1 Lexus Melbourne Cup (3200m) on November 3.
Santiago’s demise as a Lexus Melbourne Cup chance is the second blow to the O’Brien stable this week with stablemate Wichita also facing a long spell after an injury was announced on Wednesday.
O’Brien may still have two runners in the Melbourne Cup with today’s Caulfield Cup topweight Anthony Van Dyck possibly going to the race to join Northern Hemisphere three-year-old stablemate Tiger Moth.
The stable has another Northern Hemisphere three-year-old Armory plus class mare Magic Wand poised for runs in next Saturday’s $5m G1 Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m).
