The Lexus Melbourne Cup dream remains in reach for 94 horses and connections after first declarations for the race were taken today, Tuesday 29 September.
Leading contenders are current equal TAB favourite Surprise Baby and talented mare Verry Elleegant, with both also nominated for the TAB Turnbull Stakes at Flemington Racecourse this Saturday.
Other notable horses to progress to the next phase of their Cup journey include last year’s Lexus Melbourne Cup winner Vow And Declare, Russian Camelot who is fresh off a Group 1 win on Saturday, and their Danny O’Brien-trained stablemates King of Leogrance, Miami Bound, Saracen Knight and Orderofthegarter.
Prince of Arran remains on the road to the Cup for UK trainer Charlie Fellowes after first declarations while Aidan O’Brien’s trio Tiger Moth, Anthony Van Dyck and Santiago are still in the mix to potentially give the Irish trainer his first win in one of the world’s great races.
Lexus Melbourne Cup lightweight hopes Le Don De Vie, Pondus and Skyward will arrive in Australia on October 2 but currently sit outside the top 24 in the order of entry.
Victoria Racing Club (VRC) Executive General Manager Racing Leigh Jordon said the Lexus Melbourne Cup 2020 picture will become clearer this Saturday at Flemington.
“The TAB Turnbull Stakes will give us a good look at how Surprise Baby, Vow and Declare and Verry Elleegant are tracking as they build towards the Cup,” Mr Jordon said.
“Flemington Racecourse also hosts The Bart Cummings on Saturday, which offers the winner a golden ticket into the Cup.
“It is a race that has grown in popularity over the years as trainers realise how important it is to book a place in the Cup, especially for those towards the bottom of the weights. We are looking forward to seeing horses such as Schabau and Steel Prince compete for a guaranteed place in the Lexus Melbourne Cup, and paying tribute to the Cups King in Cummings.”
The 2020 Melbourne Cup Carnival begins with AAMI Victoria Derby Day on Saturday 31 October 2020 followed by Lexus Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday 3 November, Kennedy Oaks Day on Thursday 5 November and Seppelt Wines Stakes Day on Saturday 7 November.
