Smokin' Val ready for the big smoke

Three-year-old South Australian filly Smokin' Val is ready for her biggest test to date when she steps out at Flemington on Wednesday.

The Valentia filly was the talk of the town following a breathtaking debut at Murray Bridge when she won by four lengths in near-record time.

"We knew she could win, but we didn't think she'd do it quite like that," trainer Jon O'Connor said.

"She'd beaten everything of ours at trackwork, so it was nice to see her do it on race day.”

A victim of circumstances second-up, O'Connor says having Damien Oliver in the saddle on Wednesday will help tell him at what level she is at.

"She would have learnt a bit from her last start," he said.

"Wednesday is really about just looking and seeing where she's at.

"I don't really know the Melbourne form, but we have the right bloke in the saddle to tell us where she's at."

Only a $20,000 yearling, O'Connor is open to further runs in Melbourne if she is able to perform to a top level down the Flemington straight.
