Wednesday is the Spring Classics Preview Day where a number of the prospective AAMI Victoria Derby (G1) and Kennedy Oaks (G1) performers will be put through their paces in the lead up to the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
The meeting gives all runners a great opportunity to site Flemington in advance of the feature races as well as allow them to stretch out over an 1800 metre distance ideal in the program leading into the feature group ones.
Conducted under set weights and penalty conditions, this year’s renewal for both the colts (and geldings) and the fillies will be run for the fourth time.
Previous winners include the Gai Waterhouse trained Pinot who won the inaugural running of the Kennedy Oaks Trial prior to winning the 2017 VRC Kennedy Oaks (G1) six weeks later. Similarly Greysful Glamour secured the 2018 Kennedy Oaks Trial before running second in the Kennedy Oaks (G1). And last year’s Kennedy Oaks Trial winner, Celestial Falls has been a subsequent multiple stakes placegetter.
Of the boys division, Adelaide Ace won the 2019 AAMI Victoria Derby Trial before being multiple stakes placed in the spring before securing the MRC Autumn Classic (G2) in the autumn. Savoie won in 2018 before being multiply stakes-placed throughout the spring and Tavistock Abbey was impressive in winning in 2017.
This meeting has been a new addition to the Flemington calendar in recent years and has quickly become an important feature lead up for the Melbourne Spring Carnival.
