Million-dollar yearling ready for Flemington

Late last year, Octane headed to South Australia with the potential chance of going to Darwin after that. Fast forward to August 2020 and the five-year-old gelding will head to Flemington on Saturday looking to bring up his sixth victory from his past seven starts.

Trainer Phillip Stokes could not be more impressed with his turnaround in performance and attitude and says his SA team deserves a lot of credit.

"His career was at the crossroads, it's as simple as that," Stokes said.

"He was a $1.4 million yearling who'd won one from six and if he didn't perform in Adelaide he was going to head towards Darwin.

"I have to give full credit to my son (Tommy Stokes), Kayla Crowther and the other members of our South Australian team who have really turned his career around."

Since joining the Stokes stable from Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, the gelding by I Am Invincible has gone from a maiden winner to claimed five of his past six races, including a Benchmark 82, and now has a rating of 80.

"He has matured mentally, he's a much calmer horse now," he said.

"I think he'll go really well this weekend, he likes 1000 metres, the rain is a positive and he's travelled over here well."

Stokes was quick to book Jamie Kah, believing she provides similarities to Crowther, who has ridden Octane in all of his work and to him to victory in Adelaide.

"He doesn't need to be whacked around or ridden aggressively, so Jamie came to mind first," Stokes said.

"She has great hands, I think she'll really suit him and help him down the straight for the first time."

Stokes said that he has no plans laid out for the remainder of the preparation and will finalise a program following his performance this weekend.
