Trainer Robert Hickmott can see a bit of his Caulfield Cup winner Fawkner in his galloper Bumper Blast and it's not simply because they are both flashy greys.
Bumper Blast took his record to four wins from seven starts when he sprinted from near the rear of the field in the $100,000 The Belzoni (1000m) at Flemington on Saturday in an indication that he is being set for specific targets over the spring carnival.
Hickmott later confirmed so, saying a series of 1400 metres races at Flemington over the months of the spring carnival looked perfect for the horse owned by Hong Kong-based David Price and races in his familiar blue, white and red colours.
"You’d love to set him for those 1400-metre, Group 3 races here over the carnival," Hickmott said. "I think Fawkner won three of those races and he’s a horse that profiles very similar to him.
"I am not saying he’s going to be a Caulfield Cup horse but those 1400-metre races here that’s where he probably sits.
"He’s got a real affinity for Flemington – that’s the first time down the straight – but he’s been flying, the horse."

Fawkner won the Caulfield Cup for Hickmott and owner Lloyd Williams in 2013 but 12 months earlier he strung together three 1400-metre stakes races wins at Flemington – the Sofitel, Headquarters Handicap and TAB.com.au Handicap.
Hickmott said Bumper Blast was a strangely shaped horse. "He’s pretty sharp for an Ocean Park. Horses come in all shapes and sizes and he’s very elongated – he’s huge through the barrel – but he’s got a great turn of foot.
"He was a little bit soft today – we haven’t screwed him down at all – that was more or less a trial for him today so we’ll get him home, give him some time between runs and hopefully do it again."
