Winter champ ready to repeat dose

Nick Ryan has a sobering warning for Sircconi's rivals in Saturday's James Dunbar's Flemington Inn Handicap.

The Caulfield trainer suggested the tenacious on-pacer has improved since his four-length win in the Listed Winter Championship Final.

The son of Nicconi dropped back from 2000m for that race on July 4 and Ryan said he is going at least as well as he was heading into that event.

"He had a maintenance gallop on Tuesday at Caulfield," Ryan said. "He's rock-hard fit now, he's in a really good place the horse, he's very sound and he's happy.

"If anything, he's probably come on again a little bit. I'm really happy with him and can't wait to get him back to Flemington on Saturday."

Sircconi will again be ridden by Daniel Stackhouse, who was aboard in the Winter Championship decider, but rises 6kg on the 56kg he carried in that event.

They will now jump from the outside gate in the field of 12 following's Thursday's scratching of Heavenly Emperor.

Sircconi is $4 favourite in the market, shading the Anthony Freedman-trained last-start Provincial Plate winner Danon Roman ($4.20).
