Cummings calls on Group 1 colts

James Cummings is looking to his two elite colts to add to their Group 1 tallies when Bivouac and Microphone chase vastly different targets on Saturday.

Bivouac, who was the Golden Rose winner and Coolmore Stud Stakes runner-up last spring, lines up against the older horses again in the G1 Newmarket Handicap at Flemington, where Cummings forecasts a huge run after a disappointing unplaced effort in the Oakleigh Plate.

"This is the premier handicap sprint in the country," he said. "After the Oakleigh Plate (sixth) he's got a bit to prove but his work on Tuesday had some electricity about it.

"He's coiled up, tuned up, wound up and ready to show what a brilliant colt he is."

Bivouac shares equal favouritism for the Newmarket at $5 with fellow three-year-olds Exceedance and Loving Gaby within the market.

About 1000 kilometres north in Sydney, ATC Sires' Produce Stakes winner Microphone stretches out to the 1600m of the Randwick Guineas and Cummings said he was excited to see how he coped.

"There was a school of thought that he might be better off in a shorter race, so he was nominated for the Newmarket," Cummings said. "But he's got such a strength about him now that we're content that this is the way to go.

"For a colt to be a champion two-year-old one year and then to be pushed along for an autumn Guineas would be extremely satisfying.

"I feel he might be a bit more focused for this race and I've got great confidence in him being competitive against these colts.

"We're looking forward to watching him rise to the challenge."

Microphone is marked a $9 chance within the market to win the Guineas, behind Super Seth ($2.65), Shadow King ($6) and Castelvecchio ($7.50).
