Ilovemyself's unlikely Slipper bid

Greg Eurell intends giving debut winner Ilovemyself a chance to secure a most unlikely Golden Slipper Stakes start after the colt burst through late to score a most impressive win in the Listed Very Special Kids Plate (1000m) at Flemington on Saturday.

Well supported on the back of a recent trial effort at Werribee to start the $4.20 favourite, Ilovemyself turned in a stunning finishing burst to score in a performance that suggested the colt has more to offer this campaign.

"It's certainly a possibility," Eurell said of a late attempt on the Golden Slipper.

"The Pago Pago is on in a fortnight and we'll seriously think about contesting it."

Ridden by Damien Oliver, IIlovemyself was travelling sweetly throughout but when River Night ($7) raced clear inside the 200-metre mark, Ilovemyself was still trying to get clear. But once he did, he literally flew and won by three-quarters of a length.

"The heartbeat started to get a lot stronger when he couldn't get any room there," Eurell said after the race.

"Once he did start to stretch out, he's a very tough horse and it was a matter of hoping the line didn't come up too quick.

"It was a bit gut-wrenching. It would have been disappointing to lose it that way."

Ilovemyself gave warning at a recent trial that he was above average.

"Probably one good thing about trialing at Werribee, he handles the wet so that side of it won't worry us at all," Eurell said of a possible wet Sydney autumn.

"I believe he would be better suited to the 1200 metres so it might be worth sneaking up there and seeing what he can do."

The Pago Pago is worth nearly $100,000 to the winner and Eurell is hoping that would be enough for owner Neville Murdoch to consider paying the $150,000 late entry fee into the Slipper.

"The late entry fee is a bit of a sticky one but if we can get some more prizemoney it'll help me push him to get him in the race," Eurell said.

Ilovemyself's run at the Slipper is a most unlikely one as he is by a cheap stallion Ilovethiscity, who stands at a fee of just $5500 and is out of a mare (Sunstyle) than Murdoch's Larnauk Stud purchased for just $700.

Eurell explained how the horse was named: "He (Murdoch) rang one day and said 'I've got a good name for that horse and I am going to name after you - Ilovemyself' and I said 'you ratbag' then thought nothing more of it.

"Then the (registration) papers came through and he got me hands down, so we're stuck with that and we're going to have to live with it now."
