Poy hopes Hawkes 'luck' continues

Melbourne's leading apprentice Michael Poy will attempt to enhance his already strong record with Hawkes Racing aboard Notio at Flemington on Saturday.

In 15 rides for Hawkes Racing in Melbourne, the 20-year-old has landed five winners, three seconds and a third, and a $10 win bet on each of the 15 would have returned a $136 profit.

"I've had a bit of luck for the stable," Poy said with a smile.

Their highest-priced winner together was Notio, who started last campaign in June with a victory over 1400 metres at Sandown Hillside on Heavy ground.

"I was pretty confident that day because his jumpouts were quite strong," he said.

Notio started this preparation on Ballarat Cup Day on November 23, making ground from midfield for third behind the on-pace quinella of Yulong January and Bravo Tango.

Poy replaces Dwayne Dunn, who is riding at Eagle Farm on Saturday for the second and final day of the TAB Origin Jockey Series.

"I was really impressed with his first-up effort at Ballarat," Poy said.

"Yulong January has since come out and won and the form behind him has been pretty good."

Poy was Melbourne's champion apprentice last season with 25 winners and currently trails Teo Nugent by two wins in this season's standings.
