Magic Wand winning ahead of Hartnell (Image: Racing Photos)
The Irish mare Magic Wand has finally broken through at Group 1 level after six times being the bridesmaid when she spoiled the farewell for Hartnell with her win in the Seppelt Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington on Saturday.
The Coolmore-owned mare, who was backing up from unplaced runs in the Cox Plate (fourth) and Lexus Melbourne Cup (10th), powered away under Ryan Moore to win by a length from fellow mare Melody Belle, who narrowly failed to make it an eighth G1 win in 2019.
The fairytale finish for Godolphin's popular nine-year-old Hartnell was not realised but not for lack of trying with jockey Hugh Bowman riding a positive on-speed race on the marvel before he tired late into third place.
Magic Wand has proven a wonderful horse for her trainer Aidan O'Brien, with G1 placings all around the world. The Mackinnon was just her third race win but it took her earnings to more than $4.7 million.
