Oliver wins sixth Victoria Derby

Damien Oliver started AAMI Victoria Derby Day by becoming the Flemington Carnival's most successful jockey in history and then to prove it, he rode a gem of a race on Warning to land his sixth winner of the day's feature.

Oliver has now ridden 74 winners over the Flemington spring after he took the gamble and urged Warning forward after the start.

Just two minutes later, Oliver sent Warning ($9.50) clear into the home straight to eventually win by more than three lengths over Southern Moon ($21), with a length to the heavily backed Soul Patch ($3.60) in third place.

The 47-year-old hoop said later that the win was made all the more special by the fact it was for Anthony Freedman, who lured Oliver from the west to join the Freedman brothers' stable in the late 1980s.

"It was great to win for the Freedies, where it all started so long ago," Oliver said after the race.

As for his game early move to take the back-marker forward, Oliver said: "He began so well I changed plans pretty quick.

"He was a bit keen early but once Thought Of That went around him, he lobbed into the one-one and he had a good rest.

"I knew I had such an economical run and that he would stay well as he's such a clean-winded horse so I thought he finish it off that strongly."

Favourite Shadow Hero ($3) got a long way back in the race but finished off reasonably to finish fifth.

For the trainer, 2019 has been a great year with Group 1 wins such as Super Seth in the Caulfield Guineas and Lyre in the Blue Diamond Stakes, as well as training the country's best older sprinter, Santa Ana Lane.

Freedman purchased the horse himself from the sales in Adelaide for just $65,000.

"I like the stallion (Declaration Of War) and he was cheap and looked as though he'd get over ground," he explained.

A plunge from $4.40 to $3.70 for Ken Keys to train his first Group 1 winner came unstuck when Soul Patch ran third.
