The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) proudly opened the new Colours Stairway at Flemington Racecourse the Friday before AAMI Victoria Derby Day. Marking the completion of its $135 million Club Stand precinct development.

Flemington Racecourse takes next step in accessibility

The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) proudly opened the new Colours Stairway at Flemington Racecourse today, marking the completion of its $135 million Club Stand precinct development.

Whilst paying homage to the past by preserving where the Colours Building was located, this stairway will ensure that history is forever continued. The racing colours which were displayed at this location, have now been moved and are beautifully mounted along the Betting Ring buildings for both the public and members to enjoy.

The Colours Stairway forms part of VRC’s Masterplan released in 2010, which highlighted the Club’s intent to develop new facilities at Flemington and offer a superior event experience for members and the public, unsurpassed by any other racecourse in the world.

Following the opening of The Club Stand last year, this latest program of works to improve member and general public accessibility around the Racecourse marks the next step in ensuring that Flemington provides unrivalled hospitality, entertainment and racing.

The new development features a terraced stairway leading directly from Flemington Racecourse Train Station to the Betting Ring, along with a 20-person lift allowing increased accessibility for wheelchairs, prams and those with accessibility needs.

In an enhancement to the customer experience, the male and female toilet facilities have also been rebuilt including accessible amenities, and extensive garden landscaping has been incorporated into the modern design.

“This transient space is a great addition to Flemington, allowing patrons direct access to the Betting Ring, making the arrival experience much better and greatly improving overall accessibility. This will benefit everybody, and we look forward to seeing patrons make use of the asset during the Melbourne Cup Carnival, and future events,” VRC Chairman Amanda Elliott said.

The project, which commenced in February 2019, has been conducted by Jacaranda Industries. No stranger to Flemington, the company has worked across other notable projects including the Furphy Deck, Stripping Shed Podium, Audio Visual Control Room and importantly did an outstanding job as the joinery contractor for The Club Stand.

Visitors to Flemington can make use of the Colours Stairway during the 2019 Melbourne Cup Carnival, which begins with AAMI Victoria Derby Day on Saturday 2 November, followed by Lexus Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday 5 November, Kennedy Oaks Day on Thursday 7 November and Seppelt Wines Stakes Day on Saturday 9 November.
