It's second-time lucky for Surprise Baby, who earned himself a ballot-free run to the Lexus Melbourne Cup after clinching The Bart Cummings at Flemington on Saturday.
Surprise Baby was nosed out by Steel Prince when racing for a guaranteed spot in the Cup late last season in the Andrew Ramsden Stakes and after a few anxious moments for his supporters on Saturday, he ran clear to announce himself a genuine Lexus Melbourne Cup horse to the joyous cheers of favourite punters.
He is expected to challenge Finche for Lexus Melbourne Cup favourtism after Finche had earlier turned in an eye-catching performance to be placed in the Group 1 weight-for-age TAB Turnbull Stakes.
After getting back early on, Surprise Baby came through the field and Jordan Childs guided the horse to a soft victory over Supernova, with Wolfe third and Ventura Storm finishing fourth.
