Mystic Journey unplaced in Turnbull

Mystic Journey was hardly convincing in her final Cox Plate audition when she was beaten out of a place in the Turnbull Stakes at her first try at 2000 metres.

The four-year-old Tasmanian mare has long been at the top of betting for the $5 million Cox Plate despite the fact she'd never been beyond 1600m, and her Turnbull performance only posed more questions rather than answered them.

Mystic Journey sat back last on the inside of Mr Quickie before jostling with that horse and struggling to find a path in the early part of the straight.

Once she saw daylight, she ran home strongly but not overly convincingly to finish fifth.

Connections of Mystic Journey may now consider dropping her back to the 1500m of the inaugural Golden Eagle in Sydney on November 2.
