Toorak chance for Spanish Whisper

Four-year-old Spanish Whisper has earned a recall to Group 1 company after proving too strong for fellow mares in Saturday's Let's Elope Stakes at Flemington.

The Lindsay Park-trained mare was expertly handled by jockey Mark Zahra, who gave the mare a soft run in behind the pace before racing clear inside the 200-metre mark to score.

Co-trainer Tom Dabernig said after the race that a Toorak Handicap could be on the cards after she showed her maturity with her victory.

"She is more mature this prep and more settled and hopefully she can go on into the spring and have a good campaign," Dabernig said.

"Her undoing early she was always a bit unsettled but we've worked her out now."

On the line, Spanish Whisper ($6.50) had a half-length margin over Miss Siska ($13), with a nose margin to the $3.60 favourite Fidelia in third place.

Dabernig said the stable would now be tempted to run Spanish Whisper in an open grade Group 1 such as the Toorak Handicap after showing promise at that level when raced in New Zealand.

In March of 2018, Spanish Whisper finished third in the G1 Sistema Stakes at Ellerslie in New Zealand before being purchased by Australian interests with similar lofty ambitions.

"There is a race called the Blazer here on Turnbull Day and there are also races like the Toorak we'll be looking at," Dabernig said.
