Jockey Dwayne Dunn’s plea for Godolphin to keep debut winning juvenile Microphone in Melbourne this autumn is likely to fail despite the Exceed And Excel colt snapping a rare losing streak for the team at Flemington on Saturday.
The narrow victory was Godolphin’s first two-year-old success in Melbourne since Trenchant won the Gibson Carmichael Stakes (1600m) at Flemington in July, 2016.
After Dunn partnered the green but talented colt to a nose victory in the Arbour Plate to open proceedings at headquarters, he made his case that Microphone continue his initial racing campaign in Melbourne so he can continue his association with the horse.
"I have to say to (trainer) James (Cummings) and the team that they should leave him here in Melbourne," Dunn said following the last-stride victory over Tony McEvoy’s debut filly Pretty Brazen.
"It’s a pretty exciting time for the Godolphin team. We sort of stamped him early as a really nice horse and he stood up today so that’s great."

Microphone’s time in Melbourne may be short-lived however as he is not among the original entries for the $1.5 million Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield on February 23.
He is however among Godolphin’s entries for the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes at Rosehill on March 23.
Microphone always seemed to be struggling to catch Pretty Brazen but did so right on the line with his Exceed And Excel stable mate Auxin filling third place.
Dunn explained that the colt was aided by his straight-track experience as he made his winning sprint.
"I sort of took my own path and he’s trialled really well down the straight out wide so I was happy to go there," he said.
"He got a little bit lost out there late but he’s a nice little horse.
"He ran second last at his first jump out but he was a little bit colty that day and his next two were brilliant.
"Once you get on him, he’s good. In the yard he wants to play and roar and that because he’s just a lad. He’ll settle down."
Both the placegetters Pretty Brazen and Auxin are among the entries for the Blue Diamond.
