Ben Thompson has realised a childhood dream by riding his first group winner during Cup Week. The only thing was, it occurred in Singapore.
The 21-year-old winner of 290 races in Australia won the Group 2 Barker Trophy for Australian trainer Cliff Brown at his first meeting at Singapore's Kranji racecourse.
"I'm pinching myself," Thompson told the Singapore Turf Club website. "I'm glad I've made the most of this opportunity. I've been riding for four-and-a-half years. I just came out of my apprenticeship.
"It's been a whirlwind journey."
Thompson rode Mister Yeoh in the 1400-metre event to beat stablemate Zac Kasa, ridden by Glen Boss.
The jockey rides light and so has ridden mostly bottom-weighted outsiders in the 70 Group races he has contested so far in Australia.
Thompson will stay in Singapore for Sunday's Gold Cup meeting but will be without a ride in the feature race.
