The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) is excited to announce that its building partner, Multiplex, has completed the construction of its world-class Club Stand on schedule and on budget.
Ready in time to enjoy at this year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington Racecourse, the highly anticipated $128 million Club Stand promises to provide experiences unrivalled by any venue in Australia or around the world.
The Club Stand’s impressive, sculptural design by Bates Smart and its seamless construction by Multiplex have combined to create a landmark destination for local and international sport and entertainment enthusiasts.
VRC Chairman Amanda Elliott said the Club is thrilled to reach this significant milestone ahead of its hallmark events in the spring racing season.
“The completion of The Club Stand marks one of the most exciting times in the VRC’s history and we look forward to officially opening it to VRC Members and their guests in full for the first time on AAMI Victoria Derby Day,” Mrs Elliott said.
“We congratulate Multiplex on its success in bringing Bates Smart’s vision for The Club Stand to life. The Club Stand is a statement venue that will change event experiences forever and become the setting for the next generation of racegoers to enjoy racing differently.”
During its 20-month construction process, The Club Stand generated an estimated 350 full-time equivalent jobs with a peak workforce of 435 workers on site.
The breathtaking curvilinear facade of The Club Stand required installation of 90 pre-cast panels each weighing up to 30 tonnes to create a sense of movement that is synonymous with the excitement of Flemington. Approximately 1,500 tonnes of steel were used during construction with a tower crane and up to six mobile cranes on-site each day during the main structural steel construction period.
“We are delighted that Multiplex has delivered this exciting new project at Flemington to create a destination that ensures Melbourne remains the global home of sport and entertainment,” Multiplex Regional Managing Director Victoria Graham Cottam said.
“It is now time for Multiplex to hand over The Club Stand’s keys to the VRC to prepare the finishing touches before delivering an exciting and new experience to racing patrons in a few months’ time.”
There is an opportunity for VRC Members and their guests to be the first to experience the ground floor and selected pre-booked restaurants on Sofitel Girls’ Day Out and Turnbull Stakes Day, ahead of The Club Stand’s first fully operational day on AAMI Victoria Derby Day.
The Club Stand has been designed to celebrate the rich history and character of Flemington Racecourse while setting a new benchmark for raceday hospitality with three premium restaurants offering world-class dining experiences, several casual dining options and eight diverse bars across five levels.
Bates Smart Director of Interior Design Jeff Copolov said, “The Club Stand celebrates the elegance and legacy of Australian horse racing through the delivery of a world-class hospitality venue that rivals and even exceeds international entertainment standards.
“It accomplishes this through its thoughtful and elegant design that takes inspiration from Flemington’s iconic rose garden beds. The curvilinear form of the build creates an immersive, ‘in-the-round’ experience for Members who will enjoy each of the beautifully curated venues with impressive views of the racetrack.”
Sweeping 360-degree views of the Mounting Yard, race track, Members Lawn, Parade Ring, Betting Ring and Winning Post will make the action on the track easy to view from all levels. The Roof Garden has breathtaking views of the city and offers landscaped areas with open and enclosed spaces beneath canopies, a signature design element of The Club Stand’s architecture.
The Club Stand marks the VRC’s next step in its renewal plans at Flemington and the Victorian Government, Racing Victoria and Tabcorp have supported the project to ensure the racecourse retains its position as a ‘must visit’ world-class sporting, entertainment and tourism venue in Australia.
The Club Stand will secure the ongoing future prosperity of Flemington and ensure the VRC’s considerable contribution to the Australian economy continues to grow. Last year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival generated a record $444.5 million in gross economic benefit to Victoria alone, which is unrivalled by any other Australian sporting event.
