2016 AAMI Victoria Derby winner Prized Icon will be making up for lost time with plans for a testing Autumn Carnival, which includes a clash with Winx and a likely shot at the TAB Australian Cup at Flemington.
The four-year-old's new trainer Kris Lees said on Monday that Prized Icon's impressive record at Headquarters - where he has run twice for an AAMI Victoria Derby win and a second placing in last year's Australian Guineas - meant the race was a serious consideration.
"His Flemington form means we've got to have a really good look at the race," Lees said of the TAB Australian Cup on March 10.
"We'll run this Saturday in the Apollo and then he'll go to the Chipping Norton, which is a week before the Australian Cup so he'll have to continue to please us and show that he's looking for that level of race.
"He prefers a firm track and there's a big chance to go that way."
Prized Icon, who was bred and is raced by Gooree, was formerly trained by James Cummings before he took up the role as Godolphin's head trainer.
On 10 starts on Good tracks Prized Icon has never missed a place and he showed at his first run for Lees when runner-up in the Carrington Stakes at Rosehill last month that he has come back in fine form after missing the Spring Carnival through illness.
"He got crook after Brisbane (in the winter) so it might have been of benefit for him (to miss the spring) as he had a pretty long three-year-old season," Lees said.
"He's only had the one run for us and he performed well and he's come on well from that so we're looking for him to run well again in the Apollo on Saturday."
