Festival of Racing at Flemington

The Festival of Racing kicks off at Flemington with the Black Caviar, Great Horse Raceday this Saturday. Victoria Racing Club will play host to a group of racedays that’ll have every fan cheering this Festival of Racing! Here are the dates you can’t miss:


Black Caviar, The Great Horse Raceday (Saturday 18 February)

Australia’s finest sprinters will take to the track in the $750,000 Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning (1200m), in honour of super mare Black Caviar.

Black Caviar, The Great Horse Raceday will combine the excitement of world-class thoroughbred racing with a taste of Asian culture.

Off the track, Flemington’s acclaimed restaurants will feature the cooking of celebrated chef Victor Liong from popular Melbourne eatery Lee Ho Fook. 

Racegoers can also enjoy an Asian street food experience on the famous Flemington Front Lawns with sweet sensations from LuxBite, handmade dim sum from Let’s Do Yum Cha, Filipino flavours from Hoy Pinoy and freshly made sushi and sashimi from YNJ.


Melbourne-based pastry chef Bernard Chu will be designing a special cake as part of the LuxBite dessert parlour for Black Caviar, The Great Horse Raceday. 

This special creation will be part of LuxBite’s delectable range of sweets that can be enjoyed by all racegoers as part of the street food experience on the front lawn.

High energy entertainment from Wadaiko Rindo Japanese drummers, roving Cai Shen, Geisha girls on stilts, Taekwondo artists and Magician Neo will keep all ages entertained, as well as TAB’s ‘We Love a Bet’ karaoke activation. 

There will also be a range of children's activities in the Kids' Zone, including arts and craft, face painting, sporting games and pony rides.

Ten former racetrack stars from Australia and Hong Kong will form the Parade of Champions prior to the running of the Black Caviar Lightning. The parade will include past heroes of Hong Kong racing in Silent Witness, Bullish Luck and Good Ba Ba, as well as Emirates Melbourne Cup champions Might and Power and Efficient, and the people’s favourite Apache Cat.

Australian Guineas Day Presented by 3AW (Saturday 4 March)

Come along to Australian Guineas Day presented by 3AW, featuring the $755,000 Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m).

In celebration of the local community, this family-friendly day of activities and fantastic autumn racing is FREE for residents living in the following postcodes in Flemington's surrounding suburbs:

3032 - Ascot Vale, Maribyrnong
3031 - Flemington, Kensington
3011 - Footscray, Seddon

Simply present ID showing your address with one of the postcodes above to enter the racecourse on the day.

Australian Guineas Day provides the opportunity to enjoy Australia’s premier racetrack, outstanding racing, live entertainment and a host of activities to captivate racegoers of all ages in a relaxing and friendly atmosphere.

The Family Zone on the west end of the Front Lawn will feature free kids' activities including pony rides, mini golf, petting zoo, face painting and balloonists.

Super Saturday (Saturday 11 March)

The peak of Victorian autumn racing is Super Saturday at Flemington, featuring the $1.5 million Group 1 TAB Australian Cup (2000m) and the $1.25 million Lexus Newmarket Handicap (1200m). A highlight of Super Saturday is the Flemington Grazing Trail & Cellar Door which returns for 2017, promising an amazing food experience to tantalise your taste buds, set against the exhilarating backdrop of Group 1 thoroughbred racing. 

Offering a taste of the 2017 Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, Flemington will flourish with an incredible selection of the very best boutique wineries, breweries and producers Victoria has to offer. Foodies and wine lovers can enjoy tasting from exhibitors in a unique cellar door experience, while watching Australia’s best horses competing on Autumn’s premier raceday. There will also be regular activities for children, with the Kids’ Zone on the front lawn filled with plenty of activities to keep the kids entertained.

Autumn Raceday (Saturday 18 March)

To wrap up a busy month of racing at Flemington, Autumn Raceday will afford racegoers the chance to relax on the front lawns and get up close to all the action on the track. Bring along a picnic to the expansive Flemington lawns for a vantage point to enjoy the racing. 

Autumn Raceday marks the inaugural running of the Grand Handicaps to be run over 1200, 1600 and 2000 metres – each for prizemoney of $150,000. They will feature alongside the Group 2 $200,000 Incognitus Blamey Stakes (1600m) and Group 3 $150,000 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m) for two-year-old-fillies which have been moved from the Super Saturday meeting on 11 March.
