Emirates Melbourne Cup equal favourite Order of St George extended his winning streak to six by claiming Saturday’s Group 3 Irish St Leger Trial Stakes (2816m) at the Curragh for the second consecutive year.
Trained by Aidan O’Brien, Order of St George started $1.18 favourite and was patiently handled towards the rear of the five-horse field by Donnacha O’Brien.
The five-year-old son of Galileo then, as expected, asserted his dominance over the final 300 metres to win by one-and-a-half lengths.
Order of St George will have his next start in the Group 1 Irish St Leger over the same course on September 11. He won last year's Irish St Leger by 11 lengths and that was the first of two Group 1 victories, the other being the Ascot Gold Cup (4000m) in June.
Order of St George is part-owned by four-time Emirates Melbourne Cup winning owner Lloyd Williams.
Should Order of St George not come to Australia, he’s likely to be saved for the Group 1 Prix de I’Arc de Triomphe (2400m) at Chantilly on October 2, where he is equal sixth favourite.
