THE HEART OF THE CLUB STAND REVEALED
As the Club Stand continues to take shape, the VRC is delighted to share more features of this stunning facility. Step inside the heart of the Club Stand with the new Members Bar, Members Lawn, elevated seating decks and Flemington's spectacular new addition, The Roof Garden.
Designated as a Members only space, the Members Bar will be the heart of the Club Stand for all racing enthusiasts and traditionalists. Its elevated position looking over the Members Lawn, with views into the Mounting Yard and onto the track, makes it a prime place to watch the quality racing unfold. As the closest indoor space to the Mounting Yard with a west-facing balcony that includes a terrace and milling area overlooking the Mounting Yard, Members will enjoy a birds-eye view like no other. It also has direct access to the Members Lawn and the Mounting Yard from the external seating deck, and links to the existing Grandstand for access to the Committee Room foyer. From here, Members can go up to the Forum or down to the Members Betting Ring. It really is the best seat in the house, especially on the seating decks which will also include viewing platforms, ensuring not a minute of racing is missed.
The warm and comfortable interior will imbue the history of the Club, with traditional wood panelling, memorabilia on display and treasured items from the Members Old Grandstand such as the cast metal pull handles with back plates, and various signage finding a home in the Members Bar. Members will find all they need for a day at the races here, with more than ample betting facilities. There will also be TV and data screens, and of course the highest-quality food and beverage on offer.
Due to the curvilinear design of the stand, the thoroughfare to get to and from the Members Lawn and the Members Betting Ring will be easier than ever before. Members will be able to walk around or through the building for quick access from the Members Lawn to the Lobby, to the Members Betting Ring and vice versa. Racegoers situated on the lawn will have easy access to the ground floor venues, which will provide outstanding interiors and a large, delicious variety of food and beverage. Amenities and betting facilities will conveniently be close by, ensuring every need for Members are met. Dressed with umbrellas and garden furniture, the stylish Members Lawn will be the perfect location for socialising and celebrating from an enviable trackside vantage point. Enjoying the races in the open air on the iconic lawn with family and friends will be better than ever, and will continue to be the hub of the Members’ Enclosure on racedays, when the atmosphere is electric.
The new Club Stand will provide Members with a variety of opportunities to view and enjoy the races outside, from elevated viewing podiums to outdoor seating across three levels and external undercover terraces across levels one, two and three (the fourth level being The Roof Garden). In contrast to a deficiency of the Members Old Grandstand, the new Club Stand will also allow Members and guests to view the races from inside the bars and restaurants. There will be greater than 2,000 grandstand seats, and with all the viewing opportunities within the venues of the Club Stand, will comfortably allow for a greater number of racegoers to enjoy the racing action than ever before. The number of Members able to view the races will exceed the previous offering of the two seating decks in the Members Old Grandstand.
THE ROOF GARDEN
A spectacular new addition to Flemington will be The Roof Garden, with unparalleled views of the course and the city. Comprising of both indoor and outdoor areas, the rooftop will be a vibrant, social meeting place with a chic garden-party atmosphere. With fragrant and colourful landscaping, it will imbue the essence of a marquee at Carnival time and provide Members with an unmissable new experience.
The outdoor garden will house two permanent bars and food outlets. Market umbrellas, planters and trees surrounded by bench seating will create a stylish garden setting. An elegant palette of neutral colours will blend with and echo the superb grounds of Flemington, high in the sky.
Fondly referred to as the ‘Garden Stand’ during the designing phase, Bates Smart were completely aware of the significance of the gardens and lawns at Flemington, and prioritised Members engagement with the lawn in designing the stand. Capturing the soft shape of a hill but also using a flower as the inspiration, the building was designed so that the ‘petals’ and layers dip down onto the Members Lawn, linking the two green spaces. Members on the lawn are drawn up to the rooftop by the design, just as those on the rooftop can feel connected with the lawn below. The traditional energy and atmosphere of the lawn will now also be celebrated at the top of the stand, which will come alive. The petal-design roof will create ample shade and weather protection and the northern terrace will overlook the Members Betting Ring, ensuring that patrons on the roof are part of the action from all angles. Its construction is quite simple, comprising of steel and simple white materials. From above, the building will have a fantastic visual presence with its sculptural form and will be no doubt admired by people across the globe as they watch television footage of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. With a soft boundary between indoor and outdoor sections, the lines are somewhat blurred, creating an open space with options for everyone. The interior will house bars and betting facilities, with a DJ booth providing a high-energy party atmosphere for the young, and young-at-heart. The indoor venue is also ideal for functions, and will be a fantastic wet weather alternative so that the racing and Flemington in all its glory, can be enjoyed all year round.
